How to choose between laser hair removal and laser skin treatment
The two are quite different despite both being lasers. Laser hair removal targets pigment in the hair follicle to reduce future growth — the goal is fewer hairs over time. Laser skin treatment targets specific structures in the skin (excess melanin, small blood vessels, or surface texture) to address concerns like sun spots, redness from rosacea, or uneven texture. They use different wavelengths and settings.
Laser hair removal is usually a series of 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, because hair grows in cycles and the laser only affects follicles in their active phase. After the initial series, occasional maintenance sessions may be helpful. Laser skin treatments vary more — some concerns resolve in 1 to 3 sessions, others need ongoing sessions to maintain results.
Skin tone matters. Modern medical-grade lasers are suitable for a wider range of skin types than older devices, but settings and protocols differ. Recently tanned skin, certain medications (some antibiotics, retinoids, photosensitisers), and pregnancy are all factors that may delay or rule out laser treatment. Your clinician will go through your medical history and skin assessment at consultation before recommending a plan.
Preparation matters too. Shave the area 24 hours before laser hair removal — do not wax, pluck, or epilate for 4 weeks beforehand. Avoid sun exposure and tanning products for 2 weeks before any laser treatment. After treatment, apply SPF 30+ daily to treated areas. We will give you specific aftercare instructions for your treatment.
